THE SECOND edition of the modern and the contemporary Marrakech Art Fair will take place at the Palace Es Saadi from September 30th to October 3rd 2011, with more than fourteen international galleries.

As last year, the organizers Hicham and Zineb Daoudi have developed, a cultural circuit enrolled in the most emblematic places of Marrakech. In the heart of this circuit, an exhibition called “Images affranchies” (“Liberated images”) will be presented at the same time as a meeting about contemporary art in the Arab revolutions.

« Images affranchies », an exhibition in which video art and conceptual photography will be in the place of honor

« Images affranchies » is photography and video exhibition conceived by Brahim Alaoui that brings together a selection of Arab contemporary artists. Those ones even though they have absorbed “the culture of image”, they start to free their work from the classical way of representing and from the so-called taboos coming from a presumed iconoclast culture.

The artists combined for this exhibition are: Adel ABIDIN, Leila ALAOUI, Halim AL KARIM, Hicham BENOHOUD, Meriem BOUDERBALA, Mohamed EL BAZ, Nina ESBER, Nicène KOSSENTINI, Amal KENAWY, Mehdi MEDDACI, Youssef NABIL, Moataz NASR, Yazid OULAB, Younès RAHMOUN and Faysal SAMRA.

Once the communication tools and the ways of expressing created by digital art are mastered, these artists kept on conquering subjectivities in order to articulate the individual and the collective. The suggested exhibition bears singularity and diversity views of the new generation artists who explore new ways to show a changing universe. “The digital scene actors have anticipated and prefigured the Arab world internet users by taking possession of the web, in order to emancipate their country.” notes Brahim Alaoui. He pursues, « If their claims are today taking turns to the web, however it echoes back to the liberated images that are already used by the contemporary artists since a decade”. These creative artists images reveal a new critical view of theses societies et the tensions crossing them via numerous strategies and visual metaphor. They reveal the sense of intimate, call into question the history and the memory, free the imagination and unlock to the present world splits.

A meeting about contemporary art in the Arab revolutions
To continue the reflection about « Images affranchies » exhibition, Marrakech Art Fair holds a debate at the Palace Es Saadi with the participation of writers, historians, contemporary art commissioners and art specialists.

This meeting suggested by Brahim Alaoui will be listed in the round tables program animated by the journalist Roxana Azimi and organized by diptyk magazine, media partner of Marrakech Art Fair. The agenda will deal with the Arab revolutions influence on contemporary art and also the “new visualities arrival”. « As we sense, these artistes are not unemotional about the “Arab Spring”, as we know that many of them support it. They have considered to what extend the image is playing a major role in this movement. Whereas the form is depreciated, it remains effective. The photographies and the videos taken and shared by mobile phones have a conclusive media related purpose. For this occasion, it has made up a new protest aesthetic. Maybe the sign of another way to consider the moving world - or even a lesson for the future art? » is wondering Paul Ardenne, a contemporary art historian.
