March2011

DUBAI. CROSSROADS is a series of three art
exhibitions at The Yas Hotel, Abu Dhabi, in 2011,
initiated and organized by Swiss Art Gate UAE
and in collaboration with The Yas Hotel. The aim
is to make art accessible for everyone who walks
into a public place, and to showcase the work of
Emirati and resident artists.
The first exhibition of CROSSROADS shows the
artwork of four artists. Dr. Najat Makki's artwork
is inspired by her family’s tradition working with
embroidery and fabrics. Khaled Juma Ahli’s
work is an experimental series of spontaneous
and expressive forms with colorful surfaces
complemented by single-tone figures on canvas.
André C. Meyerhans uses his architectural
background to create new inspired artwork of
interior design and furniture. Rebecca Rendell's
art reflects a new approach by arranging car
parts meticulously on canvas.
If you walk through the hotel, on different
levels and corners, you will find artworks
specially chosen or created for this place.
The Light Box in the Marina Wing, next to
the Nautilus restaurant and ESPA at
The Yas Hotel displays a selection of the works
of two Emirati artists.

SWISS ART GATE UAE
Swiss Art Gate UAE is a UAE-based organisation that initiates, fosters and organises cultural and educational projects between Switzerland and the
United Arab Emirates, by international artists, with a focus on the works and performances by Swiss and Arab artists in music, visual arts, dance, literature, drama, film and news media.
Dr. Najat Makki
United Arab Emirates
Emirati artist, working and living in Dubai
Emirati artist Dr. Najat Makki, holder of a
PhD in metal coins from the Faculty of Arts
in Cairo in 2001, is one of the leading artists
of the modern art movement in the UAE
and identified as one of the pioneer
Emirati women artists.
Dr. Makki experimented with different media
and developed a passion for painting and
sculpture. Her work was greatly influenced by
her surroundings and traditions, with a clear
visual reference to her family’s interest in
embroidery and fabrics. Makki drew inspiration
from the Egyptian civilization in some of her
works since she regards the details and
the techniques of Egyptian art as
captivating components.
The outcome of her work is a colorful depiction
of calligraphy and lines staged from elements
of the environment around her.
Through the course of her artistic journey
she widely exhibited her works, gained local
and regional recognition and received many
awards, some of which are:
The Award of Culture and Arts from the UAE
2008, Al Owais Award of Culture and Science
in Dubai 2001 and the Silver Award from
Mahaba Biennial in Syria 1999.
Rebecca Rendell
United Arab Emirates
UK artist working and living in
Ras Al Khaimah
Originally from South Wales, UK, Rebecca
studied Fine Arts at Swansea Institute before
obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Textile
Art at Southampton University, England.
After graduating she worked for the
UK artist Damien Hirst as a studio assistant
fabricating and displaying his work.
She now resides in Ras Al Khaimah and
produces work at Tashkeel in Dubai whilst
giving workshops for adults and children.
She has been commissioned to produce
works for various leading global companies
and has exhibited her work in New York.
Rebecca specialises in mixed media and
‘Found’ objects through the use of patterns.
One such piece, entitled Anian, meaning
‘Nature’, incorporates hundreds of real crabclaws
which had been washed ashore. These
were then applied directly to a wall in the
of remnants of rubber tyres, reshaped and
Rebecca likes to bring a new lease of life
to materials. Her objects are found outdoors,
on coastlines, road sides, and the outcomes
are often geometric, controlled and ordered.
André C. Meyerhans
United Arab Emirates
Swiss artist working in Abu Dhabi,
living in Dubai
Swiss national André C. Meyerhans,
born 1973 and holder of an MBA from
the London Business School, a M. Arch.
ETH and a Diploma in marketing, has been
living and working in the UAE for many
years. His works are academic studies that
portray a synthesis of art, architecture and
objects. Hence, he has managed to blur the
boundaries between the three domains by
creatively using out-of-context approaches
in his explorations.
Some of his reputable works are: the concept
design for the new Garhoud Bridge in Dubai
(built) and the Main Connection Bridge and
the Welcoming Island of Palm Jebel Ali.
Some of his other architectural works
stand in Switzerland, Italy and soon in
Montenegro and India.
Khaled Juma Ahli
United Arab Emirates
Emirati artist, working
and living in Dubai
Emirati artist Khaled Juma Ahli, born 1962,
studied Architecture Technology in New
York from 1981 to 1986. After returning to
the UAE he started a handicraft business
by manufacturing mandos, jewelry boxes,
dhow models, traditional doors and houses.
Throughout his journey in art Khaled
experimented with oil on canvas and
watercolor while painting heritage houses,
desert landscapes, mountains and nature
with trees and flowers, in a realistic style.
In 1987 he was invited by a gallery in Kuwait,
at a time when the term ‘gallery’ wasn’t widely
known, and sold some of his paintings,
which motivated him to focus on creating
art. In terms of artistic growth, studying books
and techniques used by different national
and international recognized artists was
an attribute that had a great impact on
his works of art.
In 2006 Khaled turned to experimenting
with abstract elements, hence proving that
he’s a multi-talented artist whose work brings
forward influences from his Arabic heritage
and abstract components integrated in
a distinctive style.
