SAN FRANCISCO. NOTHING SUCCEEDS like success and this year’s SF Fine Art Fair proved the point. From May 19 - 22 at San Francisco’s Fort Mason Center Festival Pavilion, a record-setting 71 galleries - more even than last year’s Fair - presented the best in international fine and contemporary art. As befits such a cultural benchmark, thousands of art lovers and art buyers were greeted by a giant “Maypole” sculpture comprised of three-plus miles of rope especially created by Marcel Wilson of San Francisco’s Bionic Design.

“Location, location, location,” quipped Rick Friedman, director of the SF Fine Art Fair.  “Framed by the cables of the Golden Gate Bridge on one side, and Bionic’s one-of-a-kind ‘Maypole’ cable installation at the entrance, Fort Mason is the place to be for those who treasure art.”

The “art-full” experience didn't stop there. Other commissioned features of this year’s Fair included a mind-bending installation called “The Seduction of Duchamp,” a live painting performance by Brett Amory, interactive contributions from the Performance Art Institute, an installation called “Cream From the Top” curated by Kathryn Weller Renfrow,  Paul Hayes’ Paperlight Fortress plus real-time presentatons by urban artist Augustus Thompson presented by FIFTY24SF Gallery/Upper Playground.

“Of course we’re back this year. Last year’s San Francisco Art Fair was very well attended and by people that were truly interested and arts savvy,” said Charlotte Bernstrom of Robert Green Fine Arts. “The art exhibited at the fair was of high quality. The fair gave us the opportunity to introduce our unique sensibilities to people from all over the Bay-Area.”

The Bay Area, however, isn’t the only region showcased by the Fair’s participant galleries. One of the Fair’s most prominent additions is the esteemed Ace Gallery of Beverly Hills which is presented an exhibition of recent paintings by seven Los Angeles painters.  “Los Angeles has become a major focus of the international art world,” said Ace’s Director and Chief Curator Douglas Chrismas. “It’s only fitting to bring an exciting segment of that creativity to the viewing audience in San Francisco.”

An unique addition to this year’s Fair is the West Coast premiere of the film Full Circle:  Before They Were Famous, a rare look into the lives of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana from KIWI Arts Group. Chronicling the journey of American fine art photographer William John Kennedy’s Early Pop Artists Collection, Full Circle features rare interviews with Robert Indiana, Andy Warhol superstar Ultra Violet, and poet/performer Taylor Mead. Filled with revealing, and at times funny, personal anecdotes, the story offers a rare look into the lives and working studios of Warhol and Indiana, two key artists who influenced the course of twentieth century American art. Kennedy's photographs, taken in the early 1960s at a time when he forged a friendship with both Indiana and Warhol, capture the two and their soon-to-be iconic works at the seminal point of their careers and the birth of the Pop Art movement.

“The Fair organizers are truly reaching out to local, national and international artists and communities,” said Steven Lopez of San Francisco’s ArtZone 461 Gallery that this year partnered with the local nonprofit Art for Healing and helped create the signature Duchamp Installation. “With high ceilings and unlimited natural lighting, Fort Mason is the only venue in town that does justice to this caliber of art.”

The 2010 SF Fine Art Fair showcased the highest caliber of art, with its opening night alone drawing more than 3,000 attendees representing the “who's who” of the northern California art buying community.  This year, the Fair is poised for even greater heights. Presented in Fort Mason’s lavish 50,000 square foot Festival Pavilion overlooking San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge will be over 5,000 significant works of art from 400 internationally-acclaimed artists represented by a record 70 plus prominent galleries worldwide.

“The attendance at last year’s San Francisco Art Fair took us by complete surprise. In its first year, the fair drew in numbers of collectors that far surpassed any figures we had expected,” said Steve Diamant of New York City’s acclaimed Arcadia Gallery. “Now a year later, we  are still fortunate enough to be working with collectors who first became aware of our gallery and artists because of our participation in the fair.”
