LAUSANNE. THE HERMITAGE Foundation devotes its major summer exhibition at one of the most prestigious private collections in Europe: the collection Hahnloser. Gathered between 1905 and 1936 in Winterthur by Arthur Hahnloser (1870-1936) and his wife Hedy Hahnloser-Buhler (1873-1952), this collection is exceptional in more ways than one. It is the result encounters and friendships with many artists including Ferdinand Hodler, Giovanni Giacometti, Felix Vallotton and Pierre Bonnard, who introduced the Hahnlosers on stage Paris art, helping and advising on their purchases.

Most of the works making up the collection were acquired directly in the painter’s workshop or with major retailers such Bernheim-Jeune in Paris, and Ambroise Vollard Eugène Druet. The close ties that Hahnloser has woven with the worlds of art are also translated by many artists stay among collectors, who regularly visited the Villa Flora, Winterthur and in their winter home at Cannes. Several works still attest to those privileged moments of friendship, shared with Vallotton, Manguin, Vuillard and Bonnard. After the death of Arthur (1936) and then Hedy (1952), their descendants founded the Foundation Hahnloser / Jaeggli. Under his leadership, the Flora Villa, built in 1858 has been revised and enlarged to accommodate the collection that was opened to the public in 1995.

The exhibition shows for the first time together, the masterpieces of the Villa Flora, associated with other gems of the Hahnloser collection  that are today in private hands. The event includes more than 150 iconic works from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

The showroom opens with beautiful works of Hodler and Giovanni Giacometti, the first painters collected by Hahnloser  and a wonderful selection of Symbolist Odilon Redon. The exhibition also pays homage to the "new painting" with paintings by Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, Van Gogh or Toulouse-Lautrec.

Besides Bonnard, dear friend of collectors, Winterthur Vallotton is the flagship of the artist's collection, mainly centered on the Nabis group, which also brings together works by Vuillard, Denis andMaillol. A significant choice of prints and drawings also evokes the extraordinary creativity of graphic these artists, with whom the Hahnlosers has maintained close relations. Fauvism is finally well represented, with paintings by Matisse, Marquet and Manguin, and a remarkable collection of Rouault.
