Manama. Bahraini artist Khalid Farhan joins the ranks of Fernando Botero, Sandro Chia, Frank Stella and other monumental stars in the first edition of the Miami Beach Sculpture Biennial will be hosted by Gary Nader.

An Important selection of sculptures ranging from medium to monumental scale and featuring works by world-class modern and contemporary artists, will be prominently displayed along the Biscayne Boulevard corridor in downtown Miami, from the Intercontinental Hotel to the American Airlines Arena, and in nearby indoor venues.

" I was surprised when I received an invitation from the Biennial organisers," according to
Farhan who has been producing innovative sculptural abstractions that evoke the sleek minimalism of contemporary interior design. The use of chrome and bronze in several of his sculptures allows for the play of reflectivity and opacity. Although Farhan is known for a succinct, poised formal rigour and his recent sculptures confirms he’s a master at contrasting textures, too. Khalid Farhan has a Bachelors Degree in Arts Education, University of Cairo. Farhan is joined by Iraqi sculptor Ahmed Al Bahraini at the biennial. The exhibition will run from 29 November to 31 January 2011.

ART DUBAI
ANNOUNCES PARTICIPATING GALLERIES FOR 2011

DUBAI. Art Dubai has announced that its fifth edition, held from 16 to 19 March 2011, will feature displays by more than 75 renowned and upcoming galleries. The region’s most established and largest contemporary art fair, Art Dubai 2011 will showcase galleries from over 30 countries in the Middle East, Asia, Europe and the Americas.

The 2011 edition will be the first under the leadership of Antonia Carver, Fair Director. “I’m delighted to have joined the fair at this extraordinary moment, when it is both reflecting and contributing to the creative, social and commercial shift in this region,” Carver stated. “Art Dubai is rooted in the Gulf but is part of a ‘future conversation’ that critically links Asia and the Middle East with the rest of the world. It is enormously exciting to be a part of the cultural scene in Dubai, a city of ideas, of entrepreneurship and of debate.”

Galleries participating in Art Dubai 2011 that are returning from previous years include Frey Norris (USA), Chemould Prescott Road (India), Chantal Crousel (France), and The Third Line (UAE).

First-time participants in the fair include Goodman Gallery (South Africa), Pilar Corrias Gallery (UK), Marianne Boesky (USA), Galerie Balice Hertling (France), Chatterjee & Lal (India), L’Atelier 21 (Morocco) and Rodeo (Turkey).

While Art Dubai attracts some of the most prestigious of international galleries, it is also a fair of discovery – for myriad international visitors interested in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA) region, and for the rapidly growing community of collectors based there.

As such, the fair will also feature a section of stands for alternative spaces curated by Nav Haq, Exhibitions Curator at Arnolfini (UK). Dotted throughout the exhibition halls, these five dynamic project stands will focus on some of the most interesting emerging art spaces from across Asia and the Middle East, most of whom are new to exhibiting within the context of a fair, and will feature new and recent projects by individual artists in response to the fair environment.

In a new initiative, Art Dubai 2011 will introduce Art Dubai Live, an online platform that will be launched at the close of the physical fair, enabling an even wider and more diverse group of collectors, media and visitors to participate.

Besides a stellar roster of international galleries, Art Dubai features a raft of collateral events and non-commercial programming that reflects its position as the region’s leading contemporary art event.

Highlights of the fair will include a rich programme of performative tours, installations, film screenings, radio dispatches; a museum quality exhibition presented by Van Cleef & Arpels; and the unveiling of artworks by this year’s recipients of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize. Now entering its third year, the Abraaj Capital Art Prize is one of the most generous art prizes in the world, and provides an exciting opportunity for creative collaboration between international curators and artists from the MENASA region.

In addition, Art Dubai hosts the Global Art Forum, this year formulated by a curatorial committee that includes Shumon Basar and Tirdad Zolghadr. Global Art Forum_5 is presented by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (DCAA) in partnership with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, and Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH).
