September 2011
Szymanowicz’s world is created with the means of a module, which is the simplest component in his language.  A dot. Universe of dots, which while put near each other and collected in certain gatherings generate images of an everyday life, of memories, of things and people seen.

His linocuts are conversations reduced and transferred to objects and pictograms. But the objects are left on tables or pedestals, as somebody just used and abandoned, or they are put to drawers that don’t close. The pictograms written on rolls of papers hang from fictive ceilings, but don’t say any real message, as they are artist’s imaginary words.

The first time I saw Szymanowicz’s works I felt like being brought into a building with thousands of corridors and rooms, accompanied from some man that opened doors, saying, “you may enter here, or here, or there… “ And it was my task to connect all this images and create my own stories, as Krzysztof’s memories developed on my own imaginary. - MZ

For me art is searching for the truth, revealing the truth that the reality is an inscrutable mystery . The external world, remembered and stored in my memory is the material for my creative work, which is an attempt to answer, in the proper language, the metaphysical questions.

Thinking, which follows in the footsteps of my memory, enables me to approach the impassable threshold of cognition of things which are higher than those cognizable by the senses and the mind of the man.

The technique of linoleum block, which is familiar to me, requires time and concentration. Time and concentration are of great use in transfering my vision to the black matrix.

Graphic print is for me the best form of expression, into which marks - signs are inscribed. By tranferring onto the matrix a mark becomes a sign, I am able to describe the events which are important to me. Such an attitude makes me want to show the connection between the two worlds: of matter and of the spirit.

By using a wide range of grey and deep black colours, I move them from the sphere of literality into the realm of ambiguity. They become mysterious, enigmatic and intriguing.
We do realise that things may have different meanings,  thus the only problem is how we can comprehend and describe this Thing in the new light. For this reason, practical experience (i.e. of things and events), which cannot be a description or a translation, it has to reveal its sense.

To be revealed, the sense has to be experience, has to be conveyed with thoughts and intellectual analysis. Art is not just translation but rather moving beyond that which already exists.

I did not apply colours consciously and chose black and white linocut, because it gives greater opportunity to picture my vision, and reducing colours to white and black helps getting inside of meanings and capture ideas. At the same time black and white, their balance gives harmony and homegeneity to the piece of art.

I believe that graphics still has a significant impact on the direct level reaching the unit of material carrier, but it needs to be remembered that it is as difficult to work with a computer as with a stylus.

Great is the power of memory, a fearful thing, Oh My God, a deep and boundless manifoldness.

And this thing is the spirit, and this I am myself.

What am I then, O My God? What is my nature?
