MODHIR AHMED visits the
Pavilion of Iraq
at the
Venice Biennale

IRAQ’S FIRST and last time to participate at the Venice Biennale was in 1976, I was still a student. After 35 years, Iraq’s return to Venice was a must see for me. From a distance, when I saw the Pavilion of Iraq signage, thoughts of home, progress and freedom surged. Feelings of joy and sadness…memories of home, family and friends. Without even seeing the actual exhibition, my pride as an Iraqi overwhelmed me. These emotions were based on my being an Iraqi.
As an artist, I didn’t know what to expect. As I entered the pavilion, I had to understand the curators’ thoughts, the theme, and the artists’ interpretations and feelings. One by one I viewed the works of Ali Assaf, Azad Nanakeli, Walid Siti, Adel Abidin, Ahmed Alsoudani and Halim Al Karim. With whatever contemporary language they used, they were all in harmony. It was a good selection of professional artists and all the works were good too. I had to come back the following day to view it again; it just makes me happy to see my friend’s work and proud that they did well. It just means that Iraq artists have maintained high standards and this return is just the beginning. Kudos to the curators, artists and patrons!
