The Beirut Exhibition
Curated by the renowned Iraqi artist Dia Al-Azzawi, with the assistance of Charles Pocock, director of Meem Gallery- Dubai, the Beirut Exhibition Centre, has recently showcased a memorable Iraqi exhibition entitled "Art in Iraq Today" (Beirut, 23 November- 23 December 2011). The main title of the exhibition attempts to pay a tribute to the late Jabra Ibrahim Jabra who wrote seminal essays on modern Iraqi art, titled ‘Art in Iraq Today.’Jabra, a Plastinian novelist and art critic (1919-1994) settled in Baghdad from 1948 and ended his life there. The opening of the exhibition coincided with the launch of the book Art in Iraq Today (published by Skira and Meem Gallery). The exhibition and its supporting publication, sponsored by Crescent Petroleum and A group show of the artists’ work (organized by Solidere, Rula Alami Zaki and Meem Gallery).
The show attempts to complement the process of Iraqi modern art movement through gathering the immigrated memory of two generations of artists in the Diaspora, to stand against the catastrophic events still inflicting the Iraqi cultural heritage, past and present, on top of all the looting of Iraqi National Museum and the Modern Art Museum, burning the National Library and other institutes.
This Exhibition in Beirut concludes a series of five exhibitions held consecutively in Meem Gallery, Dubai (October 2010- May 2011). Part I, held in October 2010, exhibited the recent work of Modhir Ahmed, Nedim Kufi and Hanaa Malallah; Part II, in November 2010, displayed the work of Ghassan Ghaib, Kareem Risan and Nazar Yahya; Part III, which opened in February, showcased the paintings of Himat M. Ali, Amar Dawod and Delair Shaker; and Part IV exhibited the work of modern masters Dia Al-Azzawi, Rafa Al-Nasiri (both founders of the New Vision Group in 1969) and Ali Talib. This conclusive exhibition in Beirut includes selected works by the same artists representing the two generations (1960s and 1980s). Art in Iraq Today, which is an outgrowth of the gallery's Iraqi art project, featuring essays by the exhibited artists as well as May Muzaffar, Farouk Yousif, Nada Shabout, Georges Rabbath and Samar Faruqi.
The main idea behind this series of exhibitions which has been finalized by this Beirut exhibition, reflect an image of the present status of Iraqi art represented by prominent artists in Diaspora. Yet, one may follow the thread that covertly vibrates in the exhibited works revealing the nostalgic yearning to their Homeland, Iraq.
