‘PRINTMAKING OFF THE BEATEN TRACK’
As regular readers of the ‘artbahrain’ Newsletter will appreciate, there is comparatively little information in international publications, or prints in exhibitions and competitions, on the contemporary art being made in countries that fall outside the usual North America - Western Europe - Pacific Rim, axis. While this perpetuates the more traditional art historical concentration on works produced along that axis (and more often than not by male artists) it is also evident to anyone who has sought to get below the surface of the art world that printmaking - more than contemporary visual art produced in any other medium - is a truly international art form that transcends all borders and divisions, and is practiced on an increasing scale by artists of all generations and background, and in countries all over the world .
In my previous two books, ‘Printmaking at the Edge’ (2005) and ‘Critical MAss - Printmaking Beyond the Edge’ (2007), I explored the work of 95 printmakers and print artists from 33 countries. But, despite this coverage, there were still many countries and many artists that I had not written about, but who deserve to be better known.
I am now researching for a third book to be published by A&C Black (Publishers), London, in Autumn 2013. The book has the working title, ‘Printmaking Off the Beaten Track’, and it will be an exploration of the work of a fascinating range of artists in (so far) over twenty countries not featured in either of the earlier books. The work I have down so far has revealed a complex and interesting situation in which a number of the artists have moved from the countries of the birth, seeking or being forced into exile in other countries. Their work necessarily incorporates reference to that sense of exile. Other artists live in countries in which there is conflict of one sort or another, or that are developing from a post-colonial or post-communist past. Again, their work reflects these conflicts and developments.
But my research is not yet complete, and I am still looking for artists who work with printmaking or print techniques, traditional, electronic or experimental, in the making of their art, and who seek to address contemporary concerns, perhaps in ways that are socially or politically critical. I am interested in artists with something to say, with a mission, and a strong voice. The countries in which I am particularly interested are those in South-East Europe, the Middle East, the Near East, and North Africa.
If you are a committed printmaker or artist using print techniques, and have something powerful to say in your work, and live in one of the regions I have listed, then I would be interest in hearing from you. Please send me an e-mail, with some sample images and a CV and any supporting statement or text, and I will look at what you send, and I will reply. But I need to receive that information by the end of January 2012 - after that could be too late.
