PARIS. Following "MEA CULPA", Philippe Pasqua will show "SILENCE", his second personal exhibition at The Storage. There he will assemble a collection of previously unexhibited works showing the diversity of his most recent artistic work and experimentation.
To be seen from 1 April to 7 July 2011.
In the case of Philippe Pasqua, a mere aspect or fragment of his work is usually perceived. Some have seen his large canvasses-provocative nudes, close-up portraits with vehement strokes-while others know him through his drawings of imposing size in which the lead and eraser face off to compose an image in which the stroke and erasure are of equal importance.
Finally, some know the artist primarily through his sculptures: vanities beneath bells composed of human skulls covered with
butterflies with iridescent wings and monumental sculptures made of marble, chrome-plated bronze, or sheathed in leather.
The three areas of his work-painting, drawing, and sculpture- are utterly indissociable. They converse with each other, echo
each other, amplify and merge in a coherent approach in which the vital thrust and power of death that permeate the human
figure form the heart and crux", writes critic David Rosenberg.
The exhibition entitled "Silence" portrays itself as an organic entity, a whole work. The paintings, drawings, palimsests
(pieces on paper based on the reuse and overlapping of old images), and sculptures form an environment of immersion, a
monumental system both theatrical and poetic.
In a room plunged in darkness, a halo of light allows a sculpted portrait to appear in the onyx of Laura, a young trisomic model with whom the artist has been working for many years. A face with closed eyes whose impassiveness expresses both serene life and death. There is also a skull ornamented with butterflies completely covered with pigment IKB, that vibrant and bottomless colour in which one's gaze becomes engulfed and then lost. Elsewhere, there are long galleries of portraits or nudes whose deafening silence engulfs as much as it reveals the rumblings of their internal monologues.
A little further away is a row of massive marble ashtrays on the floor, in the middle of which stand tattooed skulls which contemplate us, like solemn watchmen or guards.
A sepulchral silence surrounds a racecar hanging on the wall. Its frantic race is suspended, as if in a state of weightlessness. Lastly, in an adjoining room, we see the artist's tombstone. Baroque and imposing, the grave monument stands in the artificial light of this closed space. The artist's date of birth and summary of his life(which also serves as a profession of faith) are already engraved: Philippe Pasqua, born on 15 June in Grasse. Started to paint in 1985 and never stopped. Art is ready, come what may.

About THE STORAGE
A unique location, multiple propositions
A display and storage space, workshop and museum exhibition location, and sculpture garden: THE STORAGE is all that and more. For Philippe Pasqua it is also a laboratory, a platform for work and reflection intended to promote international artistic encounters, exchanges, and collaboration.
Inaugurated last Autumn and situated in the nearby Paris
suburbs, THE STORAGE is devoted to contemporary creation in all its forms: contemporary art, design, new technologies (sound and image), photography, architecture, etc.
Art collectors, professionals, and aficionados, as well as
teachers and students-and let us not forget the general public-
have an opportunity to delve into the artist's world. In the near future, a programme of collective exhibitions, events, and meetings will be publicized. With an emphasis on dialogue and collaboration, artists will be invited to work there on a regular basis.
