FALUN. DALARNAS MUSEUM is to mount the first retrospective exhibition of Iraqi-Swedish artist Modhir Ahmed to be held in Sweden since the artist’s immigration in 1989.

“This retrospective survey will trace Ahmed’s trailblazing career from the mid-70s to the present,” said Anne Seppänen, Dalarnas Museum curator, as she revealed plans to bring together about a hundred works by the artist from Iraq, Poland and Sweden distilling over 35 years of the working practice and the experimental process he employs in his studio.

Ahmed (b. 1956) is widely recognised as amongst the important contemporary artists of the last 25 years in Scandinavia to come from the Arab world. Throughout his career, Ahmed has presented a continuous, powerful, and stimulating survey of the creation of contemporary identity and representation - in drawing and painting, print and mixed media.

The exhibition will showcase a selection of celebrated works and notable achievements of the famed Iraqi-Swedish artist dating from his early experiments as a student in Iraq in the 70s, in Poland in the 80s to his most recent works in Sweden -  which appear to be in dialogue with one another reflecting history, memories and media. His artist’s book on Tomas Tranströmer's Galleriet, entitled Vecka nr.II will be highlighted in addition to the “Town,” a site-specific installation produced in 2006 in Egypt which will be shown in Sweden for the first time in this exhibition.

While Ahmed defies categorisation, the exhibition
demonstrates his growth, range, and ingenuity over the past three decades. Never static, Modhir Ahmed continues to work from his studio in Sweden using new materials and new technologies.

Modhir Ahmed - 35 Years Retrospective is curated by Anne Seppänen and is accompanied by an art-critical book and a catalogue of the same title organised by Dalarnas Museum.
