Fatema Al Mazrouie
Xerxes Art, LONDON
until 30 Nov

In Collaboration with Salwa Zeidan Gallery, Abu Dhabi
Fatema Al Mazrouie was born in Abu Dhabi where she currently resides.  Al Mazrouie's works have been internationally exhibited and are found in major private and public institutions. Her works, which are multi media and constantly evolving in genre and type, are generally focused on the concept of womanhood -- specifically that of being a Moslem woman --  and on certain stereotypes associated with this notion.

“Art to me is the most comprehensive way to communicate with people; it is visual, interesting, immediate and accessible. I do not believe that more formal channels of communications convey society’s issues, ideas and concepts.

My work is about a notion of a woman, specifically a Muslim woman - what she thinks about, how she expresses her ideas, religious beliefs, values and traditions and how she views the society around her.

This is why my art cannot be attributed to one particular genre. Rather, they are dialogues and contemplations of ideas about Islamic rules and about the new phenomenon of the ‘updated’ or the ‘contemporised’ Islamic World.  In my work, I always strive for uniqueness and for the development of ideas and interests which further propel my work without losing the nexus with the viewer. This is reflected in my ongoing experimentation with different materials and techniques, from collage, acrylic and calligraphy to more recent mixed media works.”    Fatema Al Mazrouie
