Close encounter with the
Sicilian ‘artfather’
Photo essay by Modhir Ahmed
Italy was one of the tourist hotspots for Iraqi artists and Milan was my favorite destination. The last time I
visited was in the 90s.  I return after more than 10 years, this time I was headed to the island of Sicily, built
in the shadow of the great Mount Etna and overlooking the emerald Mediterranean sea, which, at the
mention of the place, the first thing that comes to my mind would be ‘home of the godfather,’ origin of the
Cosa Nostra. But I was on my way to meet Antonio Presti, Sicily’s patron of the arts in the village of
Castel di Tusa.

I landed in Palermo, a one hour drive to Atelier sul mare. I was met by Alessandro from Fiumara d’Arte,
who as we drove heading towards the Art Hotel, has been briefing me of the foundations projects and
activities.

Atelier sur mare - Castel di Tusa
When we reached Atelier sul mare, the collaged lobby was busy with guests checking in and out of the hotel cum permanent
museum of contemporary art. The 40 room hotel had 20 amazing art bedrooms that were designed and furnished by renowned artists
such like: Danielle Mitterand, Agnese Purgatorio, Antonio Presti, Cristina Bertelli (La Stanza dei Portatori d’Acqua), Mario Ceroli (La
Bocca della Verità), Fabrizio Plessi (La stanza del Mare Negato), Mauro Staccioli (Trinacria), Renato Curcio (Sogni tra Segni), Maria
Lai (Su Barca di Carta m’Imbarco), Raoul Ruiz (La Torre di Sigismondo), Paolo Icaro (Il Nido), Luigi Mainolfi (La Stanza della Terra e
del Fuoco), Michele Canzoneri (Linea d'Ombra), Hidetoshi Nagasawa (Mistero per la Luna), Sislej Xhafa (Il Bagno Turco), Vincenzo
Consolo, Umberto Leone e Ute Pyka (Lunaria - La Stanza della Luna).
