Energising the Nation
Bapco's First Annual Arts Competition
The awards ceremony for Bahrain Petroleum Company’s (BAPCO) first annual nationwide arts competition was held at the Bahrain BAPCO Club in Awali on 21st March. A number of participants were honoured for their contribution to the competition which was entitled “Energising the Nation”. Reem Al Arrayedh won the first prize, followed by Ritu Samadar and Jesus Ramos. The event was held under the patronage of Energy Minister and National Oil and Gas Authority Chairman Dr. Abdulhussain Mirza along with senior officials, dignitaries, BAPCO management and guests and many members of the general public.
This initiative is in line with BAPCO’s ongoing efforts as a key contributor to community welfare and as an active supporter of art activities and artists in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The theme reflects BAPCO’s continuing commitment to preserving the old traditions of Bahrain while simultaneously promoting modernization and growth as it transits to a modern country, lit up by the energy it conserves and powered by its wealth of well-educated citizens.
The competition was mainly held in support of the concept of “Manama, the Capital of Arab Culture”. BAPCO hopes that the project will actively contribute to the perception of Bahrain both regionally and globally as a main hub of culture and the arts, reflecting Bahrain’s long history and heritage in which current and future generations take pride.
Of the numerous entrants into the competition, twenty paintings were shortlisted for consideration for the awards. Most of the paintings were in the style of surrealism, some were expressionist and, as expected given the theme, there were no abstract paintings. Many prominent Bahraini artists took part in the event, among them AbdulKareem Al AlArayedh, a pioneering and well-known artist, as well as Zuhair AlSaeed, Adel AlThawadi, Adel Al Abbasi and AbdulRasool AlGhayeb.
