TDIC’s mission is to engage the community in the capital’s urban, cultural and artistic development and help build professional skills and knowledge in the community through a dialogue with representatives from the world’s leading cultural organisations.

Alongside Saadiyat Cultural District project, TDIC presents a diversified programme of art exhibitions, events and talks to further engage audiences in the arts including public discussions with many of the world’s greatest artists, curators, scholars and museum leaders.

Already, TDIC has shown a series of path

Other exhibitions held to great acclaim are Talking Art: Louvre Abu Dhabi; The Guggenheim: The Making of a Museum - embracing 50 masterpieces from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation collection; Disorientation II: The Rise and Fall of Arab Cities in collaboration with the Sharjah Art Foundation; the first edition of Abu Dhabi Art in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Authority for Arts and Heritage (ADACH); and most recently, A Story of Islamic Embroidery in Nomadic and Urban Traditions

As part of the ongoing cultural programming dedicated to developing awareness and understanding of art and culture prior to the launch of the Saadiyat Cultural District; Manarat Al Saadiyat was launched to bring the vision of the island alive. Located on Saadiyat Island, this artistic venue will house international exhibitions from around the world. The first phase of the building included Arts Abu Dhabi Gallery, a permanent space for exhibitions and educational programmes organised by TDIC.

residua

residua refers to the solid particles that remain after a liquid has evaporated. The process involves the alteration in form of a substance over a period of time and under a set of conditions. The resulting particles can be visible or invisible, scattered or composed – and all of them are in a constant state of flux.

In this exhibition, we examine how contemporary Arab cultures are continuously transforming. Bonds between language, politics, geography and public memory are constantly loosened and strengthened, dissolved and restored with shifts in circumstances and attitudes. The artists in residua reflect on the processes and experiences that reinvent Arab identities.

Arabs are confronted with challenges to their cultural identity due to many life experiences, among them: immigrating to a new country and leaving family behind; translating colloquialisms from one language to another such that their full meaning is lost; re-mapping territorial borders over years of conflict; demolishing old buildings and using the rubble to build new ones; and the rise and fall of public icons and political regimes.

These human experiences all leave behind residue that inexorably takes a place in re-moulding contemporary Arab identity.

A Chance to see the Private Collection of Larry Gagosian

MANARAT Al Saadiyat, the new cultural exhibitions space at Saadiyat Island, in Abu Dhabi, unveiled a world premiere of masterpieces from the private collection of renowned collector and art figure, Larry Gagosian last 22 September. The exhibition RSTW, which is under the patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, features works around 72 works from artists Rauschenberg, Ruscha, Serra, Twombly, Warhol and Wool.

“Manarat Al Saadiyat represents a beacon for Abu Dhabi’s emerging contemporary scene, and the efforts being made by the emirate to deliver a ground-breaking cultural district is testament to the leadership’s understanding of the importance of art. I am thrilled to be able to exhibit part of my collection here and look forward to witnessing the development of Abu Dhabi on the world’s art stage,” according to the powerful New York dealer Larry Gagosian was in Abu Dhabi for the premiere of the exhibition.

RSTW is a major step in the realisation of TDIC’s aim to provide a platform for an experiential exploration of art and culture. The exhibition dares to challenge and generate a new art concept and is emblematic of Abu Dhabi’s overall cultural strategy. The variety of forms and techniques of the works on show highlights TDIC’s holistic method of developing Abu Dhabi’s arts scene, in both instigating aesthetic discourses, while building a platform for audience engagement. TDIC is displaying some of the world’s indubitable masterpieces to an older generation who might never have experienced such works, and to the younger generation who are defining their own artistic and cultural impressions.

The exhibition will run from September 22 to January 24 and offers a novel insight into some of the pieces,. RSTW aims to challenge the perception of what it means to be a private collector and public figure simultaneously.
THE EXHIBITION is open for public viewing at Barjeel's 475-square-metre space on the second floor of the Maraya Art Centre. Barjeel's founding mission is to extend the privilege of viewing and appreciating eminent pieces of Arab art to the community at large. residua is the second of the foundation's planned rotating public exhibitions which strive to represent different themes of political, social and cultural importance for the Arab world.
"The main focus of our foundation is to create a platform for critical dialogue and informed appreciation for contemporary Arab art," says Mr. Al-Qassemi, whose collection includes paintings, photographs and sculptures of artists of from the Gulf region, Levant, Maghreb, Egypt, Iran and Iraq.

"In residua, we examine how Arab cultures are in a constant state of transformation. The pieces we have selected illustrate the ways in which bonds between language, politics, geography and public memory are continually loosened, reformed and strengthened."

The exhibition includes works of a range of contemporary Arab artists, including Egypt's Ghada Amer and Youssef Nabil, Abdulnasser Gharem, Tagreed Darghouth, Fathi Afifi, Jeffar Khaldi and many more.

"Art of the Arab world is as nuanced as the nations that comprise this historically, politically, socially and geographically diverse region. It's very exciting to see the works exhibited in one interactive and accessible space," says Mr. Al-Qassemi.

In addition to featuring artwork at its public exhibition space, the Barjeel Art Foundation also offers its Arab art collection to cultural or educational institutions as part of short-term exhibitions in the Middle East and abroad. The foundation will feature artworks in upcoming exhibitions in Stuttgart, Berlin, Miami and Abu Dhabi.

The Barjeel collection responds to numerous complexities of Arab culture, politics, society, injustice
and nostalgia. The pieces are poignant, giving a voice to the artists' experiences in the region and abroad. They shed light on the ever-changing nature of Arab identity and its relevance in contemporary culture. Taken together, the works of art define the ways a distinct Arab identity is
shaped and reformed within shifting social, cultural and political contexts.

MALEKEH NAYINY returns to XVA Gallery with her recent work, a series of meditations in response to the the haunting lyrics of  "The sisters of Mercy"- by Leonard Cohen.

At first a feeling of disorientation overcomes the viewer: the shock of being in an emergency ward where the sober geometry of the setting and the sense of order belie the anticipated pain as well as the uncertain outcome. Then each work brings its own demands. The perspective becomes one of seeing through shattered glass, not only darkly but in a disjointed manner, reminiscent of snapshots taken out of one's own sack of memories, and arranged in a sanitized world turned upside down, where the whirling fan adds to the sultry stillness. There is the nurse, in three-quarter view, dressed in blue against a background of green drawing room wall-paper, so soothing to the eye; a quiet interlude before the implicit violence of the stark monochrome of the Three Frames. Dressed soberly to kill or to cure, the life-saving sisters leave an indelible impression of conflicting emotions: of mercy, and pain, of calm repose and muted violence.

Seen in the context of Nayiny's previous works, such as her exuberant celebration of "travelling demons,"  they demonstrate her remarkable ability to venture out on new paths, or perhaps re-visit the same memories in a different mood. The realistic dimensions vary, but the magic remains the same.
