David Hockney: Fleurs Fraîches presents the artist’s new digital artwork in three different formats: iPhone, iPad and digital projections, mounted in the Fondation’s two-gallery exhibition space. The exhibition is in keeping with the artist’s original conception for the works: to exist as colored light projections emanating from screens.
As the images originally were created with the intent of being sent via email to friends, Hockney will on occasion send new “fresh flowers” to Paris throughout the course of the exhibition.
Hockney began working with the iPhone in 2008, and his subsequent discovery of the “Brushes” application as well as other “apps” has enabled him to produce works of extraordinary variety. Since that time, the artist has created hundreds of images, ranging in subject matter from plants and self-portraits to landscapes and still lives.
However, it is the artist’s vibrant depiction of arrangements of cut flowers and plants on view in this exhibition, which have become the subject of Hockney’s most extensive exploration into the technical possibilities of the medium. Hockney uses his thumbs and fingers to create full-color images directly on the device’s screen, modifying the color’s hue and layering brushstrokes of various widths and opacities. The exhibition will feature an animation of one or more of Hockney’s “fresh flowers,” enabling visitors to witness the creation of the work from start to finish. In addition, an 8-10 minutes triptych slide show installation directed by the artist will be displayed on a large floating
projection screen.
Speaking tat the opening, Mr. Pierre Bergé said, “It is with great pleasure that the Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent is presenting this important and innovative exhibition by an artist both Yves and I have long admired and loved.” Yves Saint Laurent handed down the esteemed cultural honor, La Rosa d’Oro to Hockney in 2004, connecting him to an important cultural chain which includes renowned artists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Jorge Borges, Pierre Boulez, I.M. Pei, and sculptor Eduardo Chillida. In October 1987, Yves Saint Laurent’s Rive Gauche collection (ready-to-wear) paid homage to the artist in the show’s finale, with a runway performance inspired by Hockney's set and costume designs for Parade, the French triple bill opera production at the Metropolitan Opera the same year.
Pierre Bergé added, “it is fitting that the artists’ longtime friendship and shared love for the natural world will combine to be seen in Paris—a city that is justly renowned for its beautiful gardens and abundant floral displays.” David Hockney lived in Paris from 1973-75, and this will be the first major exhibition devoted to his work in the city in more than a decade, when he took over the south gallery of the Musée national d’art moderne - Centre Georges Pompidou with David Hockney, Espace, Paysage (1999). The major retrospective exhibition of 164 paintings and photocollages was exhibited simultaneously with David Hockney: Dialogue avec Picasso at the Musée Picasso. Other exhibitions of Hockney’s work in Paris include David Hockney: Retrospective Photoworks at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (1999); David Hockney Photographe, at the Centre Pompidou (1982); and David Hockney: Tableaux et Dessins, at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (1974).
David Hockney: Fleurs Fraîches is curated by cultural historian and freelance curator Charlie Scheips. The exhibition is designed by New York-based architect Ali Tayar who has created an installation inspired in part by Hockney’s studio in Yorkshire, England.
Another feature of the exhibition is Tayar’s modernist take on the neo-classical French banquette which will allow visitors to sit and view both of the two gallery installations.

About Pierre Bergé -Yves Saint Laurent Foundation
Opened in 2002, the Pierre Bergé -Yves Saint Laurent Foundation is the result of forty
years of creation. It retraces the history of fashion as created by Yves Saint Laurent, fashion that reveals the inner workings of society. By making use of masculine codes, he brought women a sense of security and daring whilst preserving their femininity. These clothes are part of 20th century history. They have accompanied women’s emancipation in every domain, be it personal, social or political. Forty years of passion combined with memories that are transformed into new projects, thus continuing this long-begun adventure.
In 2010, the Foundation inherited the Majorelle Garden in Marrakech, salvaged in 1980
by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. In June 2011, this site will become the first
Berber art museum in Morocco.
