FONDAZIONE ANTONIO PRESTI FIUMARA D’ARTE
The Foundation Antonio Presti - Fiumara d’Arte launched another cultural project the “International Museum of Image” in Catania, Sicily focused on the “working-class” district of Librino (a 1970’s urban development on the outskirts of the city, consisting of “mass dormitory housing”).
THE PROJECT
Fiumara d’Arte is inviting world famous photographers to Librino where they will experience the ordinary everyday life of the place in order to give back to the district, through their sensitivity - a renewed and extraordinary self-image.
The selection of the photographers will be based on the “code” of expression. Parties will be organized in condominiums to help the participants get a more intimate sense of the soul of the place. The artists will have to develop a photographic story, a sort of family album. Each frame will bring to focus - a child, a family group, a section of architecture, an angle-shot -which will place before the eyes of the viewer that beauty which “exists”, but is “denied” because of lack of love, life and passion. Each condominium in the district will be reborn. The mission of Terzocchio will be to transform the state of malaise into a state of trust, of joy for life, of belonging to the place.
The great blank walls of the buildings, free as they are from decoration and architectural features, will become the exhibition spaces of the International Museum of Image. In this way, Librino will no longer be just a dormitory district - an identity Catania up until today still refuse to recognize because it lacks any point, either of reference or of social meeting. By nightfall when the walls are lit with their huge photographs, it will restitute to the district and the ninety thousand inhabitants of Librino, a “positive” testimony and a “revelation of beauty”. Visitors and the tourists will be thrilled and happy to wander up and down the streets; they will on the one hand admire the gigantic open air museum, while on the other, with love in their eyes, they will discover a hitherto unknown Catania.
ABOUT LIBRINO
Librino was originally planned as a modern, functional part of Catania - the “other Catania”. But, neglected by everybody, this new city district is today empty and soulless. And this is why Terzocchio (The third eye) wants to bring out the beauty of the place, observing its “whole” from an exalted and alternative standpoint.
