Secret of Vermeer’s blue uncovered ‘Woman in Blue Reading a Letter’ fully restored by the Rijksmuseum
Announcing A Series of Important Exhibitions To Inaugurate Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery
HONG KONG. SOTHEBY’S IS delighted to announce that it will unveil its newly-constructed state-of-the art gallery space in Hong Kong on 19 May, 2012, with opening exhibitions
During the meticulous restoration of Woman in Blue Reading a Letter (1663-64), one of the Rijksmuseum’s four Vermeer masterpieces, a number of surprising details were uncovered. Vermeer’s characteristically intense use of blue, for example, can now be viewed in all of its magnificent nuances for the first time in centuries. In addition, several pearls that were added in 1928 were removed, and other details that had disappeared were restored.

ALWAN 388 26 MARCH - 22 APRIL
Alwan (‘Colours’) is a month-long arts festival introduced a new wave of Bahrain’s up and coming generation of conceptual artists exploring the possibilities generated by art in the public space. Interlaced into the fabric of Manama’s dynamic yet intimate dining restaurant district, Alwan338 presented a series of specially-commissioned public art installations, exhibitions, film screenings and open-air concerts as unique actions that promoted a re-reading of the area and a public engagement with the outdoors.
Al Riwaq Art Space
“Al Mahata,” or the station, documents the important stations of our lives, in a light manner. Merging native art, installations, and photomanipulations, this joint exhibition aimed to reflect the universality of being passengers in life.
"I am the Other"
Where does the self end and the other begin? A resident artist at Al Riwaq Art Space engaged with more than 20 Bahrain-based artists in a discussion which reflected a multi-media exhibition that took place in a vacant restaurant in the heart of Adliya.
338 Restaurants Participating restaurants were altered to creatively reflect the shift of the 338 neighborhood. Artworks adorned the facades and thresholds that embrace the distinctive block camaraderie.
The Park
Reforming found and upcycled materials, an under-utilized open space was transformed into a domestic public space. Surrounded by unconventional plantings, The Park encompassed a stage, library, and cinema screen with weekly musical and film events for an unparalleled outdoor experience. Visitors enjoyed the informal seating of our onsite café, serving local snacks and beverages.
Public Art Mapping the neighborhood artistically, the public art linked the main hubs of 338 by coloring alternative paths. Alwan enhanced the surroundings by meshing a new layer to the existing natural growth of the block, leaving an imprint to its visitors.
